DC has an extensive maze of paved trails, access to which is just a few blocks from the house. Below is a map of the paved trails suitable for both biking and running. In addition, here's some useful information for bikers:
- Bike storage: whether you rent bikes or bring you own bikes, the walled patio is safe and secure so no worries about where to keep them. There's an awning to keep them dry.
- Bike share: Capital Bikeshare has 350 stations in DC, Maryland, and Virginia and you can sign up for a 1 or 3 day pass. After that, you pay for each 30 minutes of use. Extremely flexible because you can pickup a bike at one station and drop it off at another. No bike to worry about if it starts to rain, or you want to go to dinner, or you're just too tired to ride home. If you download the app, you can see how many bikes are available for pickup at a particular station or what station has a slot for you to drop a bike off. Check their website for pricing.
- Bike rentals: Thompson Boathouse and Big Bikes are both near the waterfront bike trails and rent by the hour or by the day. Big Bikes has a wide variety of bikes to rent (i.e., children's bikes, bikes w/ baby seats, tandem bikes, etc.). Check web sites for pricing.
